- Composition: Bottle 1: Silver nitrate solution. Bottle 2: Sodium hydroxide solution. To be mixed to prepare fresh ammoniacal silver nitrate.
- Use: For detection of reducing sugars and aldehydes (silver mirror test).
- Appearance: Clear, colorless solutions.
- Bottle 1 (AgNO₃ Solution): Typically 5% or 10% w/v AgNO₃.
- Bottle 2 (NaOH Solution): Typically 10% w/v NaOH.
- Performance: When mixed and ammonia added, must produce a clear solution that gives a silver mirror with formaldehyde or glucose.
- Packaging: 2 bottles, typically 50 mL or 100 mL each.
- Hazard: Causes severe skin burns and eye damage. Bottle 1 is light sensitive and may form explosive silver compounds if stored improperly.
- Safety: Wear protective gloves and eye protection. Prepare fresh, use immediately, and destroy residual reagent with dilute acid.
- Storage: Store in a cool, dark place. Keep bottles tightly closed.
